Book of Mormon: Day 189: To Know Thee

Today’s Reading: Alma 22:18-35

18 … If there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee.

Often times I find myself saying things like “Oh, I’d love to come to know my Savior more” but then I keep going on my way, doing what I’m doing, and not paying attention to what I am actually saying, what that actually means, and how I go about doing that.

And that is not the way ones comes to know Christ.

To come to know Christ is to become like Him, to try to emulate Him in all we do.

King Lamoni’s father wanted to know God so much, that he literally wanted to give away all of his sins.

Do we feel the same?

I don’t know about you, but I have a few “pet sins” that I like to keep around. They’re the ones that, while they aren’t huge sins, are ones that just kind of hang around and I don’t make any huge efforts to kick them out of my life. And that’s what I need to change. As I work on coming to know my Savior, I need to work on changing my heart, on letting go of the natural man and those “pet sins” and work on giving away all of my sins, until I have “no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.” (Mosiah 5:2) Indeed, Elder Condie taught that:

“Perhaps of all the evidence of true conversion and a remission of sins, this is the most significant: the disposition to do evil no more, but to do good continually.”

I know that as we change our hearts, as we change our disposition, we can come to know Christ on a higher level. And as we come to know Christ, we will continue to change our hearts, and we will continue to become like Him. It’s my hope that we can all, myself included, give away our sins to know Him and become true converts of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
