Book of Mormon: Day 82: Search the Prophets

Today’s reading: Jacob 4: 1-6

6  Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea.

I am a lifelong member of the church and grew up watching General Conference, and learning about the prophets in Primary and in my home. However, it wasn’t until I was in my early twenties that I truly gained a testimony of our living prophets.

This was right after President Gordon B. Hinckley passed away in January 2008. Shortly after President Hinckley’s passing there was a public viewing held at the Conference Center for all those wishing to pay their respects to our beloved prophet.   At that time my husband and I were living in downtown Salt Lake City. Each day that I drove to work, I would pass Temple Square and the Conference Center.

On the first day the viewing was open to the public,  I  was on my way to work when I was stopped at a red light at the intersection right by the Conference Center. I glanced over to my right as I watched people make their way into the building bright and early that morning. As I sat in my car that day I remember suddenly being overcome by the Spirit. There was an indescribable burning in my bosom as I felt the Spirit testify to me that President Gordon B. Hinckley was truly a man called of God. I received that same confirmation and feeling whenever his passing was mentioned on the news or radio. Because of those experiences my love for the prophets has grown stronger, and my faith and trust in them is immovable.

Once we obtain a testimony of the divine calling of the prophets,  it is easier to believe that what they say is what Heavenly Father wants us to hear.

There are different ways we can “search the  prophets” such as listening to General Conference and studying the talks given, reading the scriptures with a prayerful heart, fasting and praying for answers  and following and keeping  the commandments.

I am grateful for my testimony of our prophets. It has continued to bless my life and help me stay close to the Spirit in ways I need that help me each day.
