Book Review: The Sacred Gift of Child Birth by Marie Ange-Bigelow

Sacred-Gift-of-Childbirth

I was honestly nervous starting this book. I thought I’d have a hard time understanding (as I do not have children yet), but that was far from the truth. This book is full of insight from someone who’s studied the ins and outs of child birth on a scientific level and on a spiritual level.

The book goes very in depth of the pros and cons of epidurals, being induced, and natural child birth. While the author is very much an advocate for natural birth when at all possible, she is very understanding that each situation is unique. There was no bias or hidden agendas. She simply shared the facts as she understands them, and even illustrated her points with real life experiences of her own and other women.

The purpose of this book is not to sway women to have natural child birth, but to encourage women to include our Heavenly Father in the birthing decision as much as possible. I’ve always cherished my relationship with my Father in Heaven, but it honestly hadn’t crossed my mind that my child’s birth would be something I prayed about. I always knew I’d pray about the timing of when to have children, but not exactly how. Marie Bigelow’s testimony of this is so touching.

This book was so informative and enlightening for me. I feel that I understand the sacredness of childbirth so much more now. I now look forward to the opportunity I will have to give birth some day, rather than dreading it. Our bodies are so sacred, as they were made by a Heavenly being. Our Father has given us as women such a wonderful gift — to be able to bear children, and it’s important that we do all we can to benefit from this gift, rather than shy away from it. Child birth is not easy (The author NEVER made it sound that way), but she did make it sound like a beautiful challenge. All of life’s greatest experiences come because there was some sort of challenge involved — child birth is no exception.

I would recommend this book to anyone–especially if you’re having children and even if you’re finished. It can help anyone gain insights of the spirituality behind giving birth and involving Heavenly Father in EVERY aspect of bringing one of this children into this world.
