Book of mormon: Day 317: Strength did not abide

Today’s Reading: Mormon 2

26 And it came to pass that when they had fled we did pursue them with our armies, and did meet them again, and did beat them; nevertheless the strength of the Lord was not with us; yea, we were left to ourselves, that the Spirit of the Lord did not abide in us; therefore we had become weak like unto our brethren.

I accepted Patti’s challenge the other day and took a moment to reflect on my weapons of rebellion. Admittedly the list has gotten significantly smaller these past few years as I’ve made a more conscious effort to draw closer to my Savior. Where the list would have contained things like ‘occasional coffee drinks, Kit-Kat bars and other rich foods, Body piercings, Tattoo’s, Pride, Stubbornness, Impatience, Negativity, etc..’, it now only included a few nagging weapons – ‘Pride, impatience & stubbornness’.

In verse 26, as 16 year old Mormon leads the army of Nephites against the Lamanites we hear him pause in his account a few times to tell us about the people and their actions. The people were in open rebellion against God because of the love of their possessions and their fear of having them plundered by thieves and robbers. The people began to cry out and lament, but their lamentations were in vain. “…for their sorrowing was not unto repentance, because of the goodness of God; but it was rather the sorrowing of the damned, because the Lord would not always suffer them to take happiness in sin…” [i]

There are definite moments in my life when I feel and know that I am being  lifted and strengthened by the Holy Ghost. I am able to tap into that greater power source and feel it playing a huge part in my life. There are times when I feel my weapons of rebellion rearing their ugly head and am left by the spirit. In those moments of feeling ‘week like unto our brethren’ i.e.: weak, as a natural man I can physically feel the shift. My mind is less clear, my heart is less ‘in it’, my body is slower to react…

One my new favorite General Conference stories is from President Monson titled Principles and Promises. Do you remember it? I highly recommend the 5 min listen, it’s worth your time and effort to see faith and obedience come together in the form of physical action.

In what ways are we being faithful and calling down the powers of heaven today?
