Book of Mormon: Day 229: There Never Was a Happier Time

Today’s Reading: Alma 49-50

23 But behold there never was a happier time among the people of Nephi, since the days of Nephi, than in the days of Moroni, yea, even at this time, in the twenty and first year of the reign of the judges.

We live in a time when a lot of awful things are happening. Basically any time you turn on the news, there are reports of more shootings, more disease, more disasters. There’s a lot of turmoil going on in these last days.

Moroni and the people of Nephi lived in a time of turmoil, too. They were surrounded by quarrelings and contentions, murderings and plunderings, idolatry and whoredoms, wars and destructions (verse 21). And yet despite all of those things, they were happy. Why? What was their secret and how can we apply it in our lives?

Verse 22 gives us a little insight into how they were able to rise above the bad things happening around them and find true, lasting happiness.

22 And those who were faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord were delivered at all times, whilst thousands of their wicked brethren have been consigned to bondage, or to perish by the sword, or to dwindle in unbelief, and mingle with the Lamanites.

The people of Nephi were happy simply because they were faithful and kept the Lord’s commandments! And we can do the same!

I know it is easier said than done to remain faithful and keep the commandments when there are so many temptations and trials and horrible things happening around us. But I know that faithfulness to God brings blessings, even amid turmoil. We just have to try every day to make the right choices, to follow Jesus Christ, and to show love to those around us. Like Elder Jack H. Gosalind once said, “The commandments are guides to happiness” (source). Let’s choose happiness by choosing to keep the commandments.
