Book of Mormon: Day 220: Put On Your Armor

Today’s Reading: Alma 41: 1-7

I say unto thee, my son, that the plan of restoration is requisite with the justice of God; for it is requisite that all things should be restored to their proper order. Behold, it is requisite and just, according to the power and resurrection of Christ, that the soul of man should be restored to its body, and that every part of the body should be restored to itself.

Before we started having kids, my husband was kind of scared to bring children into a world of turmoil. That was 4 years ago. After having our son, and things started getting worse, he was even more afraid of bringing anymore kids into a world that was falling apart. Now that we have our daughter, the world is even worse. But reading this scripture brought some peace to my heart and mind. “For it is requisite that all things should be restored to their proper order.”

This whole section of scripture is talking about how good will be restored to good and evil restored to evil. Those who are righteous will be saved and those who are evil will be given their just desserts.

It is daunting to bring children into a world that seems to be falling apart in every direction. But we need not fear. We need to have faith. Boyd K. Packer said:

Do not be afraid to bring children into the world. We are under covenant to provide physical bodies so that spirits may enter mortality (see Gen. 1:28Moses 2:28). Children are the future of the restored Church. (i)

When I look at the world and what is going on, and the examples that our children have to look up to, I’m afraid of what is in store in the future. But when I let go of the fear and look to our leaders in the church and the examples that they provide, I have faith that our children have the opportunity to change the world we are living in only IF we provide them with the proper and firm foundations they need to remain spiritually strong and stable.

One thing is very clear: the safest place and the best protection against the moral and spiritual diseases is a stable home and family. This has always been true; it will be true forever. We must keep that foremost in our minds. (ii)

A favorite Primary song comes to mind:

Because I want to be like the Savior, and I can,
I’m reading His instructions, I’m following His plan.
Because I want the power His word will give to me,

I’m changing how I live, I’m changing what I’ll be.

I’ll find the sword of truth in each scripture that I learn.
I’ll take the shield of faith from these pages that I turn.
I’ll wear each vital part of the armor of the Lord,
And fight my daily battles, and win a great reward.
Scripture power keeps me safe from sin.
Scripture power is the power to win.
Scripture power! Ev’ryday I need

Before our son was born I was prompted to start studying the scriptures. Almost two years ago I was inspired to start reading the Book of Mormon with him. He takes in more than I realize. It scares me to think what my kids will face in the future, but I know as I read the scriptures to them and with them I will be arming them with the best armor to fight their daily battles.

May we ‘take upon {us His} whole armor, that {we} may be able to withstand the evil day, having done all, that {we} may be able to stand” (D&C 27:15).
