Book of Mormon: Day 170: Much is given

Today’s Reading: Alma 9:1-24

20 Yea, after having been such a highly favored people of the Lord; yea, after having been favored above every other nation, kindred, tongue, or people; after having had all things made known unto them, according to their desires, and their faith, and prayers, of that which has been, and which is, and which is to come;

My husband made the reference ‘this is the Spiderman philosophy’ – and he is spot on. So let’s take that and turn into a spiritual nature… Sister Sheri L. Dew taught: “‘Unto whom much is given much is required’ [i] and at times the demands of discipleship are heavy. How often do we feel the heavy burden of discipleship and wonder ‘is it worth it?’. Well, that all depends on what it is that you’re working toward…

Coming unto Christ means walking away from the world. It means placing Christ and Christ only at the center of our lives. [i] It is not a passing fancy or a ‘one and done’ check box to be filled. Coming unto Christ is a lifelong journey of growth, struggle and commitment. What is it that you’re working toward on a daily basis – when was the last time you stopped and asked yourself that question?

I find I am repeatedly reminding myself of the bigger picture as I stumble through my day. I fight not to get dragged into someone else’s bad mood, I fight to make conscious word-of-wisdom food and drink choices, I fight to show Christ-like love and patience with my children and husband as they wear on my last nerve… and why? Because I have made a covenant with the Lord that I will take His name upon myself, at all times and in all places. I have made a promise that I plan to uphold because I know that no matter what the day or the adversary throws at me I will grow from it and move just that little bit closer to my goal.

The Lord’s standard of behavior will always be more demanding than the world’s, but then the Lord’s rewards are infinitely more glorious—including true joy, peace, and salvation. -Sheri Dew

  • This is beautiful: “It is not a passing fancy or a ‘one and done’ check box to be filled. Coming unto Christ is a lifelong journey of growth, struggle and commitment.” So true!
