Book of Mormon: Day 145: Come Unto Christ

Today’s reading: Mosiah 21:30-22:16

33 And it came to pass that king Limhi and many of his people were desirous to be baptized; but there was none in the land that had authority from God. And Ammon declined doing this thing, considering himself an unworthy servant.

The 2014 LDS  Youth Mutual Theme was “Come Unto Christ”.  At that time I was serving in the Young Women’s presidency and because of the new year’s theme. I felt a strong conviction to gain a deeper relationship with my Savior.

Starting in January of that year I began to faithfully read my scriptures each day;  I prayed with more sincerity than I had been, and I fasted with greater purpose. I studied harder and sought the Spirit more as I prepared my lessons for the Young Women. As I did the very things we were trying to teach our young women, I  noticed such a difference in myself as well. I felt the Spirit more, and I truly felt as if I was “coming unto Christ”.

I now know that my desire to draw closer to the Spirit was a blessing for me.  Although at the time I did not know it, it was preparing me for something I would soon be experiencing. In March of that same year my best friend gave birth to her third child, a son named Jacob. He lived only a few hours and soon passed away after complications from childbirth. I had never gone through something like that with a friend or even a family member before and it has continued to be one of the most heartbreaking experiences of my life.

Because of our close relationship I felt the strong need and desire to be there for my friend and her family.  I knew that I needed the help of the Lord to guide me through each action I took. This all happened at a time in my life when I had never felt closer to the Spirit.   I know I was blessed with being able to know how to be a source of comfort for them. On several occasions I felt impressed to say the things I said, or do the things I ended up acting on. I felt the Spirit as my constant companion and I know I was being used as an instrument in the Lord’s hand.

I would like to share some of the lyrics from the song “Come Unto Christ”, which was the Youth’s theme song for 2014. I have listened to this song so many times over the past few years and I am always touched by the Spirit so strongly when I do.

“Come unto Christ….So let him in~ And you’ll remember who you are. He will mold your life and change your willing heart.” lyrics from the song Come Unto Christ

We are taught that if we are doing the best that we can- by following the commandments, reading our scriptures, praying, fasting, and paying our tithing- those things will help us to “come unto Christ”.  We will feel the Spirit more closely in our own lives, which well help us be there for others and to be a blessing for them as well.  The  2014 Young Men’s General Presidency stated “As you draw near to the Lord, you will have a desire to serve others.” I have found this to be true and I am grateful for the blessings that has been in my own life as well.

  • Hi, Cindy! I know you wrote this piece MONTHS ago, but I am new to the She Teaches Fearlessly group and just read it this morning. It touched my heart deeply and made me want to redouble my efforts to stay close to the Savior so that I will be ready to help any of my loved ones who face heartbreaking trials. Bless you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us!
