Book of Mormon: Day 114: Towards The Temple

Today’s Reading: Mosiah 1:11-2:6

6 And they pitched their tents round about the temple, every man having his tent with the door thereof towards the temple, that thereby they might remain in their tents and hear the words which king Benjamin should speak unto them. (Mosiah 2:6)

Every time I read this verse two things stick out to me. First, that the people were so excited to hear their king speak, that they came up from their homes to listen to him. And second, that they pitched their tents with their doors toward the temple.

When I was a child I didn’t fully understand just how amazing it was that we had a living prophet that spoke to us, and that we were so blessed to be able to have a full weekend two times a year where all we did was listen to our prophets and apostles, and they spoke to us what God would have us hear. But as I’ve grown older, I continually am reminded of that blessing, and look forward so much to those weekends. Not because it gives me an excuse to sit around in my pajamas all weekend, but because those messages are things that I now crave. I hunger for His words. Just as the Nephites came up from their homes to listen to their prophet and king, I “come up” from my earthly home to a more spiritual place, as I listen and internalize the messages.

Not only do we have a living prophet, but we have a temple, a literal House of the Lord where we can learn more of Him and commune with Him and find peace and comfort. Do we fully understand what a blessing that is? I will admit, there are times I do not. But I love the reminder, the imagery, that we must always have our doors pointed towards the temple.

I hope that I, that we, can always remembers how blessed we are to have prophets and temples in our lives today. That we can live our lives pointed towards the temple, that we may hear and listen to what our prophets and our God have to teach us.
