Today’s Reading: 1 Nephi 16
And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things. 1 Ne. 16:29
One of my favorite stories in the Book of Mormon has always been the one about the Liahona. What an amazing device, and an amazing story. This thing of “curious workmanship” appeared outside of Lehi’s tent one morning, and showed them the way to go, according to their faith. I always thought it was so cool when I was younger, and truth be told, I can’t wait to learn more about it after this life.
But today I want to talk about the last line of the above verse, which says, “by small means the Lord can bring about great things.” What an amazing thought – but what exactly does it mean?
To me, it means just that. By small means come great things.
Something as simple as a smile or a text message can brighten someone’s day. Something as small as praying every day can change your life. Adding an extra 5 minutes to your daily scripture study can increase your testimony.
These small things, though they seem simple and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things are what actually change you and others around you. We should never underestimate the power of a smile, a hug, a prayer. Because it’s by these small things that we let the light of Christ into our lives and the lives of those around us.

I imagine it would have been quite easy for some in Nephi’s family to say “it’s not reasonable that words appearing on this ball actually come from God.” But once the promptings were followed, it would be a lot harder to deny the fruits of the blessings that come to you from following the prompting. Such a simple thing led them to accomplish the work the Lord commanded them.
