After Christmas Intentions

After the gifts are unwrapped, the caroling is over and the cookie stash is thinning out, it can be really hard to keep that same level of motivation and focus on the Savior that the Christmas season can provide. We know we need to remember the Savior all year long, but it can be tougher if you’re someone who tends to hit a spiritual high note right around Christmas. Going from the excitement and fun and warmth of the holidays can make settling back in to regular life feel like a bit of a let down.

Whether you’re a new years resolution type of girl or not, you can make intentional choices daily to stay in the spirit of Christmas long after December 25th.  Sometimes the word “goal” can throw people off, seem too intimidating or, if you’re anything like me, once you put a label on something it seems way less fun and exciting to do.

So, we’ll go with intentions. I don’t think your post Christmas intentions need to be to stay on par with all the effort you were putting into parties, gifting, church activities, scripture study, Elf of the Shelf, or anything else you do intensely during Christmas (because is that sustainable all year long?).  I do think you can pick and choose what makes the season special for you and strive to keep up in small ways with those aspects of Christmas throughout the year.

You’re probably about read to get back to your leftovers and family time, but before you do, I’d like to share a few things I’m working on as far as intentions go to keep feeling all the wonderful joy of Christmas.

Firstly, magnifying my calling.  My husband is our ward building representative. He is currently supervising and helping clean the church (yes, while I’m in pj’s writing this). He didn’t complain once yesterday or today about waking up early to go clean.   There are times when I’ve had callings I straight up dreaded.  While we’ve probably all not been in love with a calling or few, I’m certain my terrible attitude probably didn’t make things any easier for me.

Our ward has huge bunch of rising Sunbeams, so I’m switching from nursery (which is a calling I definitely did not dread – snack time and toys, yes please!) to teaching Sunbeams. I’m honestly, really nervous about it. I didn’t go through any of the children’s programs in the church and have no idea what to expect. But, I was promised a binder, a really awesome lady for a co-teacher and six cute three year olds, so I’m pretty sure it’ll work out just fine.

When ye are in the service of your fellow beings you are only in the service of your God – Mosiah 2:17

Secondly, choosing scripture study. There are so many times I could turn to the scriptures when I have down time during the day.  Mostly, I turn to social media, texting, or news apps.  While these are not serious bad choices, I know I can do better and get more out of my day if I read a few lines of a talk, listen to scriptures while I drive, or even just read positive, motivational content instead of busying myself needlessly with comparison. I’m not swearing off social media, but I am acknowledging I can use my free time better than I do now.

Lastly, I want to keep praying the way I do during Christmas.  Filling up my prayer with thanks to the Lord for blessing us with our Savior.  I want to keep being thankful and not ask for so much.  The Spirit is so strong around Christmas and I know that it can be that strong all year long.   But, it requires effort on my part every single day.

Prayer is one of the most precious gifts of God to man. – J. Devn Cornish
