Advent: Day Seven: Immanuel

-Isaiah 7:14

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Immanuel.

This glorious and sacred name literally means ‘God is with us.’ The greatest joy, the purest peace, and the highest hope in my life come from knowing this simple but crucial truth.

God is with us. In the barren fields, in the fruitful orchards; in the stark and dreary winters, in the new warmth and hope of springtime. He is here. He knows us by name. He loves us with a love more pure than we can comprehend.

In the greatest gift to all of God’s children throughout all eternity, He came to Earth to suffer for our sins, experience our sorrows and learn how to comfort us.

“And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.”

-Alma 7:11

Let us celebrate His birth–the commencement of His life of love and teaching. The beginning of hope. The most perfect and selfless gift. And let us hope to become more like Him.
